Club racing or Regatta's

An interesting thought to ponder is whether club racing is more important then regatta racing is, to the health of your club. We all strive to get better, beat the guy next to us or move up the rankings or fleets from year to year. Regattas provide those opportunities to jump the learning curve. But in the end is it more important now then ever to make sure that the club racing and local sailing starts to take on a more significant importance? Local racing grows the sport and your club by providing opportunities for people to be exposed to iceboating at the beginners level.

We want to hear your thoughts.

  1. I couldn't agree more.

One of my biggest disappointments over the last few years has been the lack of local sailing conditions. Madison has a great collection of lakes for iceboating. In the past we typically got three or four early-season weekends as the lakes froze in sequence. In recent years, the seemingly regular pattern of storms every seven days has really cut into those opportunities.

Let's hope for a better season this year!

  2. I can think of only one weekend in the last few years when Green Lake had sailable ice, and there was a regatta elsewhere. Racers know they have to travel to the best ice - which is often a "that morning" call, so it's not a club racing vs. regatta sailing - it's traveling sailing vs. no sailing

  3. You have made the point far better then I could. The key word is BEST ICE, if your club has good ice but not the BEST ICE do you sail locally or not. To make the local racing better I hope the ice conditions crew will make huge strides in getting people to use local spots more, and make the information more accessible for all.

PS 2009-10 season I sailed just about everyday for two months straight, last year not nearly enough.
